About this course:

Torri Wright (MA, Sped) will be presenting all three parts of the Challenging and Complex Behavior modules (from the See Beyond Behavior curriculum) in a single day class - including the Level 1, Level 2 and Bringing the Tools Together modules!

This on-demand workshop was adapted from previously recorded classes with 'live' participants, as the discussions and perspective shared during the class provide real world context for the curriculum. Topics covered in this course include:

Level 1: How our life experience determines our reactions; Reflection and self-accountability is the fundamental skill to becoming a healthy support.

  • Breaking down our personal bias – what do “we” as adults bring into supporting others?
  • Self-reflection and willingness to own our portion and reflect on what could have been done differently
  • 90% of communication is non-verbal, what are we relying on and missing?
  • Becoming a proficient observer – noticing the subtleties of human behavior and interaction
  • How do we change our style of communication to meet the needs of our students?
  • Understanding and implementing the power of flexibility; as providers how can we adjust to see behind the lens of those support

Level 2: Decoding the language of behavior and understanding what influences our ability to self-regulate

  • Environment – Health – external influences – Pre-sets/Setting events
  • Human Behavior 101
  • What the behavior is communicating
  • What is the function – what influenced the outcome – How did care provider influence the outcome
  • The behavior is not about us, so why are we reacting?
  • Behavior is communication, when we focus on the decoding of behavioral language we can respond and avoid reactivity that often leads to power struggles

Bringing the Tools Together: Pulling together the knowledge of Level One and Two, we begin to identify strategies and tools to build towards healthy co-regulation

  • Foundations of self-regulation and how this plays a role in becoming a co-regulator
  • Scenarios and examples of co-regulation in action
  • Putting the tools into action – all participants work towards solving situations that require co-regulation, self-reflection, and flexible thinking/responses
